Σχόλια | Reintroduced in 1989 (from Kenya) (Ref. 8600). Introduced for cage culture in Lake Kariba. Successfully cultured in ponds near the lake and some individuals have escaped into the lake. It was introduced to enable a commercial farm to remain viable while indigenous spp. were not able to achieve, even after 4 years of selection of rapid growth in peer groups as broodstock. Selection of O. niloticus females for conformation - size for age has resulted in a select strain that performs very well in the given environment. Also used to sustain a pond based and take fishery where fish of 3 kg gross mass are common, and which greatly enhances the farm income. The farm provides employment for 20 semi-skilled workers and puts 200 tonnes of gutted fish into the markets place annually. Ref: FAO, 1997 |
